Overview of Northern Nigeria Education
Northern Nigeria was initially an autonomous division within https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Pittsburgh_Alma_Mater Nigeria. It was different from the southern part of the country. It has its independent customs, foreign relations, and the security structures. In 1962, northern acquired Nigeria the territory of the British northern Cameroons. This was voted to become a province in the northern section of Nigeria. Education has remained a greater challenge in this section of the country. Obstacles are severe in northern states. This has affected northern Nigeria completely. To add to these severe issues in the northern part of Nigeria, family and school resources have also affected education. On the other hand, attitude towards education attendance and extremism by Boko Haram has been a challenge to schooling. Book Haram is an Islamic militant group, and their target is girl’s education.
The objective of the group is to oppose the western style of education. According to them, western education is associated with formal schooling and seeks to relegate women exclusively to the household. In the past five decade, northern Nigeria has lagged behind educationally due to the insurgency in the northern part. The region is lagging behind due to many factors. Among the factors is the low level of enrolment in primary, secondary and post educations levels. As compared to the southern part Nigeria, there is a general lack of interest in education. On the other perspective, the state in northern Nigerian has invested little into the education sector. Inequality in the development of education in any state is normally a major factor major factor in the emergence of a strong and united nation. It has to be strong to defend ethnic nationalities that are commonly surrounding that state.
These ethnic groups grow differently when it comes to attainment of education. Some of these communities are a great advantage to or disadvantage in the distribution of public education offices. This happens because education plays a vital role in the sharing process. Therefore, the gap between the north and the south parts of Nigeria is wide. Northern Nigerian has parity in education development unlike in the south where education is for all.
The following are the factors causing education disparity in northern Nigeria.
ü Cultural factors
This a central factor when it comes to education development. Culture in northern Nigeria has advanced in the level of material culture. Therefore, this makes the children not to focus much on education. Children were taught practical skills that are needed to function successfully in traditional society. As boys grow older, they were introduced to farming and other specialized duties such as wood carving and drumming. On the other hand, girls were introduced to basic skills of farming and domestic chores.
ü Islamic culture
According to the historical records, Islamic was the first form of education to be accepted between 1085 and 1097. Islamic education in northern Nigeria was strictly religious. In every Muslim community, children were drilled when they are as young as five years old. The basic teaching they received were of Quran and the Arabic alphabets. During the colonial period, larger cities took an advantage by building expensive Islamic school. These schools taught basic math and science.
